Aug. '17- Week 1- Girls Camp!, Lagoon, Bee's Game,

We left for camp by 9:45 and got to Aspen Meadows around 11:00.  We set up tents and ate our sack lunches.  The first picture below is of all the girls working together to move a table while McKady Kump, our birthday girl, was laying on top catching a ride.  We had an orientation around 2pm with Bro. and Sis. Muir, the camp hosts.  They encouraged us to think about and ask Heavenly Father, "What am I supposed to learn this week?  What will make me a better person?"  We gave out t-shirts and played the "horizontal ladder" game as a unity and team building activity.  It went fairly well except Marcie, who was the one walking on the elevated ladder, fell!  I felt so bad.  She was super brave and got back up again!

After that we introduced the personal study/reflection time we wanted the girls to have almost every day.  I explained that this was a time that I think back on fondly from my camp and EFY days.  The scripture study time was when I really learned how I best learn from my personal scripture study.  The YW were very quiet and took this time seriously, which I was very happy about.  Then we went down to the pavilion to make bracelets, talk, hang out, and have pulled pork sandwiches for dinner that night!  The sad news of the evening was that Andrea Gunnerson was quite sick for most of camp with a fever, sore throat, and congestion.  After dinner we used the amphitheater for our skit night.  The girls were divided into three groups and were given a bag of props/costume pieces.  They were also given a scenario and some key words and performed for each of the other groups. They all did awesome and you could tell they really loved dressing up and being silly!  We had apple crisp for dessert and then headed back up to our camp site and I was asleep by 11:15ish.
Wednesday morning we had our devotional, omelettes in a bag for breakfast, packed our lunches, and left for our hike.  We had a little bit of trouble finding a hike that was close by, had a destination, and would be 2-3 miles in length.  The hike I found was for Big Elk Lake.  However, the directions to get there were pretty shady.  The road was so terrible to get there!  Super rocky and bumpy!  Some girls got pretty car sick.  We passed some four wheelers on the way up that said we should probably stop because our cars (even with 4-wheel drive) probably wouldn't make it.  We drive a little further but then decided to park in a clearing and start the hike earlier than planned.  We still needed to go 2 miles just to get to the trail head.  So we hiked and found these cool rocks overlooking a smaller lake and ate our lunch.  My phone GPS said we were .5 miles to the Big Elk Lake trail head and also only about another mile to Little Elk Lake.  So we opted to go for Little Elk Lake but ended up needing to leave the trail and go up and over a hill to find the darn thing, but we found it!
It was lovely and the girls had a good time throwing/skipping rocks, dangling feet in the water, and MaKayla even swam a little in her clothes.  Thankfully the weather wasn't too hot and mostly cloudy.
At our lunch spot MaKayla accidentally fell in some mud and Annaleah was nice enough to help clean up her behind.  :)
We were gone from camp a total of 6 hours and probably ended up hiking close to 6 miles. But the girls did really well and were patient with us even when we didn't 100% know where we were going.  I kept calling it an "improv" hike.
When we got back to camp we had otter pops and soaked our feet in kiddie pools with bath bombs.  We had free time and I showered!!  After taco salad and peach cobbler, I gave an evening devotional on "...that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him."

Then we did our glow stick night!  The girls want to do this every year and I don't blame them.  We bought about 300 glow sticks and many rolls of clear packing tape and they make themselves stick people.  We went for a walk and visited another ward that was camping there and our camp hosts, the Muirs.  I even tried to get pictures of the girls swinging.
Thursday we made water mark t-shirts using glue and shirt dye.  They turned out pretty cute.  The girls also had more personal study time, then we had the girls rotate through archery, horseshoes, and a slack line.  (The picture of Dan doing archery is from Friday.)
The girls loved the swing set there!   We had some cows roaming through camp as well.  They actually knocked over some of the hay bales at the archery range.  Poor Cate Gunnerson kept getting bloody noses, but tampons did the trick to stop it a couple times.  Here are the Kossin girls holding up their water mark t-shirts.
The Mia Maids were also in charge of a game on Thursday afternoon.  We played some intense Hide and Seek where they set new rules for every round.  For example, for one of the rounds, we couldn't touch any leaves.  Brigette McKamy gave our evening devotional that night, we listened to MaKayla Cardall's comedy routine, and we played the skittles questions game where every color represents a question, as well as another question game with a beach ball Erica made.

Friday after we had quiche for breakfast, the Laurel class gave a little fireside about being a pineapple, meaning stand tall, wear a crown, and be sweet on the inside.  They also gave us a scavenger hunt.  Two groups' maps weren't quite correct so they took quite a while to find their treasures.  The groups that finished quickly had some free time so I called and talked to Dan for bit.  The girls then had some journal time.  After lunch the Laurels also taught certification.  We had free time and later Dan and Sylvia arrived!  We played games and talked for a while and Dan even tried out the archery.  We had pizza and salad for dinner, then we had our testimony meeting.
Dan gave a little lesson before about being connected and strengthening relationships with each other and with the Lord.  He gave each girl a carabiner.  Becky also gave a thought about what she had learned about prayer while at camp and during her personal study time.  Many girls shared their testimonies about how the personal study and reflection time really helped their testimonies grow! Major success!  We had donuts as a treat and the girls enjoyed their last night at camp by going on a night hike and Sabrena Koehler playing pranks with her stuffed dummy, "Francine."

Saturday the girls were awesome at helping pack up and clean up.  We had left overs for breakfast and we were out of there by 9:30am!  One last group picture!
I rode home with Erica and we were back to the church by 10:40.
Dan was amazing getting all the kids ready, McKenna to stake choir at 8am, then fed all the kids breakfast in his office and to a baptism by 10am!
We all got home around 11.  Dan helped me unload and unpack while I started laundry and showered.  My 10 week pregnant body did quite well at girls camp and I never really felt nauseous.  However, once I got home and relaxed a little (aka- let my guard down) I felt pretty yucky and SUPER tired.  I crashed hard on the couch after lunch and then finally got moving to get a grocery list ready.  We ran errands in the evening.  Phew!  What a great week!

*Here's what Dan and the kids were up to while I was gone!
He took the kids plus some cousins to the $1 Summer movie then got them "special juice and bread" for lunch.  They also went on a bike ride on the Lagoon trail.
Wednesday Ben went to a birthday party for one of his old preschool friends, Annie.  Thursday, Dan had to work some in the morning, then they went to Western States LAGOON DAY!! He said it was definitely tricky managing 4 kids with very different height qualifications and ride desires.  Thankfully there were other extended family members there to help.
Dan even said Anna did better than last year and rode quite a few more rides than last time.

Friday Dan had to work some more, so the kids had fun at the Holdstock's house!  In the afternoon, when he came up to camp, Dave and Laurie were nice enough to watch the kids and put them to bed.

Sunday I shared my testimony about what I learned at camp.  The YW in our ward are happy, joyful, brave, hard-working, and had great faith in their leaders even when things didn't go as planned.  They have been taught of goodly parents whom I look up to and I want my kids to be like them.  I'm grateful for my Savior and everything I do and say is because I want to return to live with Him again!
Anna was supposed to pray in Primary that day, but was too nervous.  I also sang in RS with Kim Ulmer and Meghan Johnson for Marilee Novak's lesson about visiting teaching.  That night we had to role play with the kids because there was so much fighting.  They liked it and practiced talking nice to each other.

Monday we had a meeting for Bethany's speech.  She also had her more extensive hearing test.  She passed and they said there were no major concerns other than there was one frequency that needs to be retested in 6 months.  The kids did not do so well during the testing and I there was lots of fighting.  :(  Thankfully the kids took naps in the afternoon since we went to the Bee's game that night!  We were lucky enough to sit in the box with Grandfather.  The train is always a hit!
Bethany hated the Bee mascot though.  There were a few other Nelson family members there as well.

July '17- Week 4- 2 Bike Riders, Pioneer Day, Mantua Swim Day, Activity Days Camp, Granddaughter Sleepover, Pregnancy Announcement!

Saturday we did yard work and the girls loved playing together in the Dan's car.  The kids also rode bikes and all of the bike practicing thus far this Summer finally paid off!
McKenna rode a bike all by herself!  She pedaled and balanced!  Woo hoo!
McKenna got to choose a small prize at the store... of course another beanie boo!
We took the van in to get new tires.  After lunch we went swimming at the Gunnerson's.  We splurged and went to dinner at the Texas Roadhouse then picked up groceries.  After kids were in bed we both worked on church stuff.

Sunday I had a little bit of a hard time getting Anna ready for church.  She refused to go but after much negotiating she ended up going in a regular clothes (thankfully a skirt at least).  Dan gave an excellent lesson to the youth about the Law of Chastity.  We went to Sam and Lara's for dinner that evening.

Monday was Pioneer Day.  After breakfast we went up to Bountiful Blvd so McKenna could practice biking more on a longer stretch of flat surface.  I jogged a little and Anna even rode Ben's Hot Wheels tricycle.  When we got home, we decided on a whim to change the kids's bedrooms around.  We moved McKenna upstairs to her "own room", Anna downstairs to the bottom bunk, and Ben up to the top bunk.  You could say they were all pretty happy about it!  After lunch the Alexander's and Camille came over to play and have a lemonade stand, but they sold grape Koolaid (since that's what we had).  They made about $12 and split it up between everyone.
For dinner we went to Jake and Ailin's new place for a BBQ.  The little girls loved dancing on the deck and we tried cookms filled with all the good stuff!
After that we went to our neighborhood "Cul de Sac of Fire!"  There were great treats and snacks and AWESOME fireworks!  The kids loved playing with all their friends!
It ended just in time as a storm rolled in.

Tuesday the kids slept in pretty well after such a late night.  Swa babysat while I took Bethany for a speech evaluation and she qualified for services!  She qualified due to a significant gap in what she understands and what she can actually verbalize.  They also said she needed a little bit further hearing testing just to make sure her ears are not the main issue for the speech delay.  Unfortunately, later and more most of the day, the kids fought a lot about being in McKenna's new room.  I worked on girls camp stuff in the afternoon.

Wednesday I went walking in the morning.  Then to singing practice at the Novak's for a song I was going to sing in RS.  Then we headed up to Mantua for another friends' swim day!  The Roths and Alexanders came this time!  Rachael always takes some great pictures.
We found out that my friend Melissa is pregnant!!
We left around 4:30 and drove past a 4-person airplane crash on I-15 that killed all 4 people.  So sad!
After dinner, we set up our last outdoor movie.  Bethany was cute and waiting so patiently in her little chair.  We watched the "Peanuts" movie.  The Gunnersons were the only ones who came and sadly enough we had to cut it short due a storm rolling in.
Thursday McKenna and I got up bright and early, packed a lunch and headed to Huntsville to Camp Kiesel for an Activity Days day camp.  It was a little chilly most of the morning, but I'll take that over hot any day!  We started with a flag ceremony then divided into groups and rotated through different stations.  Our group started with a leather craft and shopping at the trading post.
Then we went to a little obstacle course.  We only had one of our 15 girls that was too nervous to climb that high.
There was "fishing" activity as part of the obstacle course too.  Next, we went to the BB gun and archery range.
We went on a little nature walk and then to the canoes.
We had closing flag ceremony and then had lunch.  Such a fun group of girls!
We got home around 2:30 and Dan, who had been home with the other kids, had to leave for a work meeting.  He also showed me that Ben took the final leap as well and learned to ride his bike! 2 new bike riders in the family!!

Dan also took this picture while I was gone.  Anna wearing some doll shoes.
I worked on camp stuff for much of the afternoon.

Friday my visiting teachers came then we went to Bethany's ear check at the pediatrician.  Unfortunately it was inconclusive.  Nothing major to worry about, just needed further testing.  We had a fast family lunch with Dan at his office.

When we got home McKenna and Ben went to play at the Alexander's.  Erica came over for our final girls camp meeting from 2-4.  That evening McKenna and Anna went to the granddaughter sleepover, so we took Ben and Bethany to the Royal Indian restaurant and then to the Rec Center park for some playing.  Afterwards we got ice cream at McDonald's.  Saturday morning I found Bethany playing in my make-up.  Probably actually the first time this has ever happened and I was lucky enough to catch her before any real damage was done.
The girls had a blast as always at the sleep over with all their awesome cousins and wonderful Grandma!
Painting birdhouses.
Saturday Dan and I did a BUNCH of yard work.  I swept out the breezeway and we heavily weeded and trimmed back trees and bushes on the east side of our house.  We had so much yard waste when we were done Dan and Ben made a trip to the city dump.  After the girls got home we all kind of chilled for a bit.  We ran errands in the evening to get all the last minute girls camp preparations finished.  After kids were in bed, Mickelle came over so we could stop by Jonathan's NEW HOUSE!  He bought it and was super excited to show us.  It's a really nice place and a tiny bit closer to us.
Sunday morning we had our final final girls camp meeting at my house with all the YW leaders to make sure we were all on the same page.  I didn't feel 100% before church but we still managed to be on time.  I substituted that day in singing time for Jr. Primary.  That evening we had Webster family dinner and celebrated all the July BDs.

**Right before presents, we took our kids into Grandma's office and told them I was pregnant!  We gave Bethany a piece of paper that said, "I'm going to be a big sister."  McKenna actually teared up a little and gave me a BIG hug!  Anna kept smiling and looking at my tummy.  Ben and McKenna both asked "When did you get pregnant?"  We just told them we found out on Dan's BD. :)  We told them they had to keep it a secret for about 10 mins.  We slipped another little piece of paper into Reed's present that said he was getting a new cousin.
Here's Bethany opening her presents! A new sleeping bag from the Stewarts!
Also some adorable new outfits from Grandma and a Mickey and Minnie house.
All the July babies!
Monday Brooklyn Ulmer babysat while Dan and I went to our first OB appointment.  We got to hear the baby's heartbeat and it was wonderful!!  I teared up a little and even after feeling sicker than other pregnancies, it finally felt real to me!
Not the best ultrasound pictures, but there's our little peanut and Bethany's bog sister sign!
After the appointment we went to lunch at Cafe Cancun.  Dan went to work and I worked on laundry and getting ready for camp!  I also Skyped my mom and dad to tell them our good news!
Bethany also decided she wanted to try sitting on and maybe even going pee on the little potty.  Nothing happened, but the girls sure loved trying to help her along.
After dinner, there was a lot of fighting so we had a little circle time where we took some deep breaths, stretched, and said nice things about each other.  I had singing practice that night for the song I would sing in Relief Society the next Sunday.

July '17- Week 3- Tony Grove Camping, Bethany Turns 2!, Parade Float Preview, Outdoor Movie, Backpacking, Parade,

Right after Patriot Camp ended, we had a picnic lunch in the park, then we headed north for our family camping trip!  Bethany loved helping Dan get the marshmallows for S'mores.  We stopped by Mantua and Wal Mart in Logan because I was a dummy and forgot my tennis shoes!  We got to camp around 3:30 and set up and explored.
We left to go hiking and around the lake and it started raining pretty quickly once we got started.  So we took cover under some trees to wait it out and see if it would pass.  We thought it was letting up a little so we pressed forward, then it unfortunately started coming down even harder!!  So we kinda ran for it back to our camp.
There was just enough of a break in the storm for us to start a fire and cook our dinner.  We had hot dogs, reheated grilled zucchini, and grapes.  We had planned to cook some crescent rolls on a stick but the thunder and wind was rolling in and we barely had time to eat and run for cover in the tent trailer.
While we waited for the storm to pass, we told stories, sang songs, played with their stuffed animals and waited.  We should have had the kids bring in their entertainment bags from the car, but oh well.  Once it finally stopped it was way too wet to start a fire so we had the marshmallows plain.  We decided to go for a quick stroll to burn off their nervous energy and saw piles of snow still in mid JULY!
We did manage to get the one family picture and a great shot of the beautiful scenery!
We tried to sleep around 10 but Anna was coughing quite a bit and Ben came up from underneath around 12:45 and it was a rough sleep from there for me.

Saturday Ben was up at 6:45am but the girls slept in till 7:30!  We ate breakfast and then started celebrating this big girl who turned 2!!  We love our sweet Bethany!
She opened her cards, a glitter light up ball, some new shades, and a mini beanie boo that she immediately called her "baby!"
We also went ahead and gave her another jumbo marshmallow!
Everyone then got dressed and we packed up most of our stuff.  Then we headed out to try hiking again around 10:45.  It was clear blue skies and just beautiful.  We saw a fly fisherman at the beginning of the hike and he told our kids to come closer and watch.  He caught one fairly quickly and Ben got to help reel it in.  Ben even knew it was a rainbow trout because of a fish poster he got from the Mantua hatchery...3 years ago! His (selective) memory is amazing!
The kids did great on this hike/nature walk.  It was probably close to 2 miles and we enjoyed the scenery and then stopped to throw rocks in the water at the end.
We had snacks and packed up and left by 12:40.  The kids were all asleep by 12:55!  We had lunch at Cafe Rio in Logan, then stopped by Jake and Ailin's new place on the way home.  We finally got home by 5 ish and the kids were pretty grumpy.  We did showers and had leftoves for dinner and all kids were in bed by 8pm!!  Overall the kids said they loved camping!  We wish it hadn't rained, but it certainly made for a memorable time!

Sunday Dan and Ben attended Pres. and Sis. Farnes mission homecoming then we went to our regular church meetings.  Unfortunately, Dan ended up coming home after sacrament meeting due to a "man cold." :(  Poor guy.  Mickelle stayed for dinner that night.
Monday I ran 1 mile with McKenna (in 11mins.)!  She had been wanting to come with me and we finally did it.  She only needed to walk at .7 miles.  Pretty good!
We packed a lunch to eat in the car and went to the Days of '47 Parade float preview! (Ben would not even stand in front of the BYU float.)
We saw the Stewart cousins there too but basically just crossed paths.  The kids loved doing all the scavenger hunts to get candy prizes.
We got home around 2 and the kids just played and had some quiet time.  They also made/decorated these headbands with stickers that Mickelle got for Anna for a later BD present.
That evening I went to my cousin Marianne's bridal shower.  It was so fun to talk to so many cousins!

Tuesday we ate breakfast, packed lunches, got dinner going in the crockpot and let for the day to go to Mantua with friends for a swim day.  Ben also made this Lego golf bag and clubs.  Kylee Behunin, Meghan Johnson, Sarah Moulton, and Laura Lewis all came.  I love my time with my friends while our kids play together.
We left around 5:15 and I listened to my book on the way home.  Dan had the rest of dinner ready for us when we got home.  Ben and Anna stayed up a little late that night because they napped on the way home from Mantua and just weren't tired yet.

Wednesday I ran 2 miles.  I had a dental cleaning.  Then Bethany had her 2 year check up!  The three older kids played at Dan's office (just down the street) during the appointment.
Bethany's 2 Year Stats
Height: 32 in (2.3 inch increase in 6 months) 10th percentile (she's growing!)
Weight: 23 lbs 13 oz (1.33 lb increase in 6months) 15th percentile
Head: Still 50th percentile
Milestones between 18 months and 2 years

Bike practice for the day.
He loves to quote Maui from Moana, "I am still falling!"
McKenne played at the Alexander's in the afternoon.  Everyone took naps later and then McKenna had Activity Days which was a water party at Karla Mortensen's house.  After dinner we did baths and had a dance party while we waited to set up for our outdoor movie.
Bethany's favorite "Monkey Song."
"Cello Wars"
Since we weren't getting a great turnout from the youth, we decided to invite some families this time.  The Alexanders, Lewises, and Roths came...along with Quinn Paulson and Scott Schmutz.  We watched Storks and had almost 10 bags of popcorn!  Poor Dan was helping someone with a mental health emergency so he missed the whole thing.  Good times though!
Thursday McKenna and Ben went to Grandma's Cooking class.  They made pizzas!
That evening Dan took McKenna and Ben back packing with Uncle Brian and some of the Stewart cousins up to Rudy's Flat.  Once they left for the evening I took the little girls on a little walk around the neighborhood but it was quite hot!
Dan said the kids did great!  The only down side was Henry threw up around 11:30pm and Brian had to give up his bedding and keep the fire going all night since he and Henry spent the night outside of their tent in case Henry threw up again.
Ben loved finding that giant snake skin and was super mad Dan wouldn't let him bring it home.
Friday morning I worked on a grocery list while Anna and Bethany played pretty nice together.
Then Lizzie over to play.  Bethany enjoyed no one telling her "no" about the lite bright.
Dan and the kids got home from backpacking around lunch time.  They unpacked and showered and ate. The kids got invited to play at the Alexander's and Dan and I passed out on the couch for a while.  We had a quick dinner before heading to the Bountiful City Handcart Days Parade!  McKenna walked in the parade with her Dance Studio.
Bethany was adorable waving at everyone!
Hard to see McKenna, but here she is walking by!
After the parade we went to Hokulia with the Roths and the baby girls lost their shirts so they wouldn't get stained.  ;)
